2018.  Client: ICCAT. Aerial survey campaign aimed to provide fishery-independent indices to improve the knowledge of Bluefin tuna populations in the Mediterranean, particularly addressed to the spawners aggregations. The surveys was performed in June in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea and Sicily Channel (Areas C and E of the Survey Design).

Strengthening regional cooperation in the area of fisheries data collection (ReCoLaPe).

December 2017 – March 2019, Client: European Commission, DG MARE. The overall objective of the project is to strength the regional cooperation in the area of biological data collection for fisheries on highly migratory species.In the current context where regional cooperation will evolve from a single meeting (RCM – Regional coordination meeting) to a continuous process that will have greater responsibilities (RCG – Regional coordination group), the project will seek to enable Member States to build up experience in new areas ofregional cooperation, that allow them to properly advance in the establishment of the Large Pelagic Regional Coordination Group (RCG -LP). We understand that this project will be valuable to improve the coordination among EU Member States in the fisheries data collection field in support of stock assessment and fisheries advice. At the same time, this project seeks to provide solutions to certain needs, in terms of data collection, identified both the by scientists involved in the stock assessment of the tuna RFMOs and by the RCM-LP.


Sustainable entrepreneurship for stronger skills and new employment (ENTREFISH).

Entrefish project wants to increase the skills, in terms of innovation and sustainability of SMEs enterprises in the fish and aquaculture sectors improving both the skills of the people working in the sector and attracting new high skilled workers, developing and supporting the needed multidisciplinary approach to sustainability (environmental, biological, social, managerial, marketing issues) and a cross-sectors approach as well (fishery and aquaculture).

Actions aimed to enhance the participatory role of Mediterranean small-scale fishing in the decision making and advisory processes at national and EU level (ArtFishMed).

January 2016 – March 2017. Client: EU/DG MARE. Partnership: Unimar and MEDAC (Mediterranean Advisory Council). Contract N.: MARE/2014/04-SI2.723954. The project had the purpose of carrying out activities aimed to contribute to strengthen the small-scale fishing sector in the advisory and decision-making processes, such as: information collection, organisation of meetings, creation of instruments for the information sharing, involvement of associations and fishing companies.
 


Tagging programme of the Atlantic-wide research programme on bluefin tuna (ICCAT GBYP Phase 6, 08/2016).

2016. Client: ICCAT. Electronic tagging campaign of Bluefin Tuna aimed to study the migratory behaviour. Tagging area: Southern Italy (Strait of Messina).
Tagging campaign of adult Bluefin Tuna was carried out using electronic tags in order to provide additional data to better understand the behaviour of Bluefin tuna. Recreational catching methods were used to tag and release the individuals.

2016. Client: ICCAT. Electronic tagging campaign of Bluefin Tuna aimed to understand the fish migratory behaviour. Tagging area: Eastern Mediterranean (Turkey).

The scientific tagging campaign was carried out in the Eastern Mediterranean, in particular in the South-Eastern coast of Turkey, close to the Gazipaşa town (Alanya), by a partnership between Unimar and University of Istanbul, Faculty of Fishery from Turkey. Professional purse seine vessels were used to catch the fish and stock them in a cage for tagging.

Implementation of a monitoring action on biological and environmental parameters in the framework of actions for technical assistance to the Directorate General of Marine Fisheries and Aquaculture as in the Council Regulation on European Fisheries Fund (EFF) No 1198/2006 of 27 July 2006.

2010-2013. Client: MiPAAF. Under the program, Unimar had the task of carrying out a series of activities, divided into 13 thematic work packages, aimed at providing technical and scientific support to the DG for its institutional purposes. In this framework, Unimar was required to evaluate and monitor the fisheries resources, evaluate local and national management plans, evaluate the effects of protected areas, use the GIS to support decision-making policies, provide to the Administration staff with experience in biological resources and environmental monitoring and administration, fisheries rules and policies, organize meetings and release publications aimed to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and technical-scientific culture of fishery resources and aquaculture, implement a network for the development of transnational cooperation between actors in the fields of competence, provide scientific support for the construction and analysis of national legislation and community sector, provide scientific support to the Administration in international meetings including through the provision of experts.

Reorganization of national aquaculture production data over the last decade; data updating for 2010 and 2011 in accordance with the EC Regulation 762/2008; analysis of production and technology trends for a proper management and development of the key sectors.

2012-2013. Client: MiPAAF. The monitoring program included the census of aquaculture on the Italian territory, assessing trends in production and technology for the proper management and future development of the sector.


Evaluation of the presence of “mixed catches” in the different Italian fisheries, describing it by métier and catches composition, in order to individuate and define the full extent of the problems arising from the application of EC Regulation 1224/2009 and Reg. EC 404/2011

2012-2013. Client: MiPAAF. The project was aimed to assess the relevance of the problem of “mixed catches” at the national level in order to: have an information base useful to quantify the entity and the value of any economic loss; base any request for derogation to the regulation on affordable data; offer a range of alternative assumptions that, while leaving unchanged the purpose, make the regulation more applicable to all the sector.

 

Technical assessment on the impact in terms of economic and environmental sustainability of the elimination of so-called minimum sizes provided exclusively by national standards.

Collection and analysis of the knowledge basis on catch reduction of demersal species along the Emilia Romagna coastline.

2012-2013. Client: MiPAAF. Implementation of a survey aimed to identify the lack of catches in the Northern adriatic and individuation of the sectors affected by the problem.

National observation program of bluefin tuna fishing campaign 2012.

2012. Client: MiPAAF. Unimar had the role of planning and implementing the program of observation of the fishing season for bluefin tuna in 2012 took place from 20% of the boats of LOA> 15 m longline whose individual shares of the rights and authorized by all the traps. The work has resulted in the recruitment, training and coordination of observers who have worked on boats and at the traps.

Assessment of the Bean Clam (Donax trunculus) in Maritime Districts of Livorno, Viareggio and Marina di Carrara

2012. Client: MiPAAF. The research was carried out through a scientific fishing campaign aimed to assess the consistency and distribution of the Beam Clam in the Maritime Ditricts of Tuscany.

 

Scientific activities related to the National Management Plans for Italian hydraulic dredges and rakes (EC Regulation 1967/2006)

2012-2013. Client: MiPAAF. The project wass aimed to carry out the data collection and analysis of scientific reports, produced by the shellfish Italian Management Consortiums in the areas of competence, in order to develop the trend of bivalves through the years; the program was also aimed tocarry out scientific surveys to monitor the resource in the Maritime Districts of Ortona and Termoli, in order to assess the size distribution.

 

Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) fishing with surface and bottom longlines: analysis of the issue and recommendations on management (ITAFISH)

2011-2013. Client: MiPAAF. The project was aimed to the application of an experimental protocol monitoring useful for describe the extent and the articulation of swordfish drifting longlines (bottom and surface ones), in order to evaluate both the gear diffusion and its characteristics, assessing the impact on the species and providing the necessary elements for the formulation of appropriate management measures.

P.E.S.C.A. Project – Data Collection

2009-2010. Client: Regione Campania. The project was aimed at developing a system to collect statistical records of the fishing sector of the Maritime Authorities of Campania. In terms of outlook, the information system may represent a reference system to be used for assessing the impact of interventions that are going to make the territory. Data collection was divided into three phases: the census of the entire universe of the boats, with the verification of the existence of the boats and gear the vehicle is mainly, the selection of a sample of boats, the weekly collection of data boats selected. used to evaluate the impact of interventions that are going to make the territory.

 

Widening and dissemination of the knowledge base on the functional development of the eel National management plan required by Reg (EC) 1100/2007.

Project for the transfer and dissemination of the results achieved by the project “Research aimed at setting up a knowledge base for the development of a National Management Plan for the resource Anguilla anguilla” with a view to meet the requirements for the establishment and the ‘implementation of the management plan: 1.
